Zimbabwean international Bill Antonio will for the better of 2024, miss action after sustaining a serious leg injury, leading him to be ruled out for six to nine months, his Belgian club KV Mechelen have confirmed.
Antonio got injured last week Saturday against Cercle Brugge in Belgium, and was forced off after 37 minutes.
The verdict of the injury was unknown until Mechelen announced on their social media platforms on Tuesday.
“The verdict is heavy. Bill Antonio tore his ACL on the field at Cercle Brugge, and will not be in action this season. He has a revalidation of 6 to 9 months,” confirmed the Belgian Pro League side.
The major setback happens at a time the 21-year-old has been enjoying his form since being elevated from Mechelen’s U-21s to the senior team.
Following his impressive performance, the Prince Edward Academy graduate was recently handed a new deal that will keep him at Mechelen until 2027.
“Bill Antonio extends his contract Behind the Barracks. The 21-year-old flanker will continue to shine in the yellow-red colors for a little longer,” the club posted on Facebook last Friday.
This season, Antonio has three goals to his name in as many games.
The injury means the ex-Dynamos star who was in form and was expected to earn his second national team call up will be sidelined for the Warriors’ upcoming friendly matches in Malawi mid March.
