Provincial Affairs Minister Owen Ncube calls for public toilets in Kwekwe

KWEKWE – Minister of State for Midlands Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube made a tour of Kwekwe on Friday last week and called for the local authority to build free public toilets in the sprawling but generally dirty city.

He also expressed concern on the frequent sewer blockages which pose health hazards to the residents.

He called on the local authority to adopt the Smart City concept and to desist from allocating stands in wetlands.

Addressing residents at Mbizo 4 Shopping Center Ncube also called upon the local authority to install a standby generator at Dutchman’s Pool Water Works and ensure continuous water supply to the city.

“The City is experiencing poor sewer reticulation due to vandalism at the plant.

“There are no adequate vending stalls, no free functional public toilets and poor waste management which requires additional refuse compactors and an improved landfill,” he said.

The government is exploring ways of dealing with the issue of Kwekwe town, in the Midlands province, where the ground underneath it has become weak due to illegal mining activities in disused mines, a senior official said on Thursday. In March, one of the classrooms at Globe and Phoenix Primary School caved in, resulting in 18 pupils being injured.
Fourteen pupils were injured at Globe and Phoenix Primary School when a classroom block caved into a mine shaft.
