BULAWAYO – Highlanders players reportedly downed tools on Tuesday by boycotting training while demanding signing on fees that they are owed from last year.
According to a report by the State owned Chronicle newspaper, the players have engaged the clubs leadership over the impasse.
Over the weekend at the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) the issue was raised by executive secretary Morgen Dube who admitted the players were owed their signing-on fees.
“Nothing had been agreed on between the club and players late yesterday and it remains to be seen if the players will get to work today,” the newspaper reported.
The developments will be an unwelcome distraction for the returning manager Kelvin Kaindu who is trying to build a team that can challenge for trophies.
The club have signed Marvin Sibanda (25), Brian Ndlovu (24), Reason Sibanda and Brian Mlotshwa.
Striker Calvin Chigonero, who was on loan at Bosso last season, has penned a permanent deal with the club, while Mvelo Khoza has been promoted to the first team from Bosso90.
The club has also been ruthless, terminating the contracts of strikers Stanley Ngala, Washington Navaya, and winger Ray Lunga.
