Golf star Tiger Woods was driving at almost twice the 45 mph speed limit when he crashed in California in February, according to the Los Angeles County sheriff.
Investigators said his SUV was travelling between 84 and 87 mph before it left the road and rolled over several times in Ranchos Palos Verdes. The accident left the 15-time major champion with serious injuries to his right leg.
Sheriff Alex Villanueva said the crash was caused by excessive speed and the driver’s failure to handle a curve in the road.
Officials confirmed there was no evidence of alcohol, drugs, or distracted driving. Woods also agreed to have the findings released publicly.
Authorities believe the 45-year-old may have accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake while trying to regain control. Woods has said he does not remember the crash.
Investigators did not examine his phone or conduct blood tests, stating there were no signs of impairment.
Woods underwent extensive surgery to repair multiple fractures in his lower right leg and ankle, including the insertion of a rod and stabilising screws.
He is currently recovering at home in Florida.
Woods, who has 82 PGA Tour victories—tied with Sam Snead for the all-time record—made a remarkable comeback in 2019 by winning The Masters, his first major title in 11 years.
