BOTSWANA – Authorities at Kutlwano Police Station are still reluctant to disclose circumstances that led to the shooting of a middle-aged Zimbabwean woman.

The woman, who was in the company of her male colleague, was shot early in the morning of last Wednesday and is currently recuperating at Nyangabgwe Referral Hospital (NRH). Her male colleague is also a Zimbabwean.
The police have also not offered any hint as to where exactly the woman was shot, but sources have indicated that she was shot somewhere within the ‘Blocks’ area. The woman was shot in the lower part of her body, but the exact area and number of shots taken is not specified.
While circumstances behind the incident remain a mystery, sources have also indicated that police officers who were on routine patrol allegedly shot the woman.
The sources said that the woman was shot as she attempted to flee from the police for fear that she would be arrested because she is an illegal immigrant. However, police spokesperson assistant commissioner, Witness Bosija maintained that it is still too early to disclose anything about the incident.
“We are still investigating. The male who accompanied the shot woman is in custody and assisting us with investigations,” Bosija said on Friday when asked what could have triggered the shooting.
Nearly three months ago, officers at Kutlwano shot a 31-year-old man, Khulekani Maphorisa. Both the police and Maphorisa who hails from Tutume offered contradicting versions of what transpired on the day of the shooting. Maphorisa was shot three times on the leg and hand while the third bullet slightly pierced through his thigh, but did not cause major injury than the first two bullet entry points.
Police said they shot Maphorisa because he was attempting to fend off arrest after he was found attempting to unlawfully enter a dwelling house at Block 9 location.
Maphorisa, however, maintained that he did nothing to warrant a shooting apart from roaming near the area of the incident. Meanwhile, another Francistown woman miraculously survived death after a train hit her on Thursday.
On Friday Francistown Central Police Station commander, superintendent Lebalang Maniki told The Monitor that the woman is in a stable condition and had sustained minor injuries.
The incident occurred along the railway line near the Botswana Housing Corporation offices.
“We do not suspect an attempt to commit suicide. Preliminary investigations suggest that the woman might have miscalculated the speed of the train due to a lapse in concentration, which resulted in the accident,” Maniki said. Maniki said this is the second incident recorded by his station in approximately two weeks.
“The first incident happened along a railway line near the bus rank. The incident involved a middle-aged man. The circumstances that led to the first incident were identical to the recent one and the man also sustained minor injuries. He was released from hospital a few days ago,” Maniki said. The Monitor
