Harare magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe granted the same amount of bail to Matemadanda and two other war veterans’ leaders, ZNLWVA vice-chairman, Headman Moyo and Harare executive member, Wayne Bhila.

On Monday war veterans spokesperson, Douglas Mahiya, who is facing the same charges of insulting or undermining the authority of the president, was also released on $300 bail and was ordered to surrender his passport and stay at his Chitungwiza house.

Charges against the four war veterans leaders arose after a recent ex-combatants meeting in Harare where a communique describing Mugabe as a ‘genocidal dictator” was circulated.

On Saturday, prominent South African lawyer George Bizos made a surprise appearance at Mahiya’s weekend bail hearing, accompanied by former South African Constitutional Court judge, Johann Kriegler — as the war veterans’ fallout with Mugabe went truly global.

Bizos was the late Nelson Mandela’s lawyer and friend, and also represented opposition leader and former prime minister in the government of national unity, Morgan Tsvangirai, during his failed treason trial in 2003.
