Exiled Zimbabweans came out in their numbers on Saturday to protest opposite 10 Downing Street in solidarity with the #ThisFlag movement while calling on the regime of President Robert Mugabe to step down.
The demonstration was put together via the efforts of UK based singer Tracey Zengeni and other activists. It took place opposite 10 Downing Street (Office of the British Prime Minister) in London from 10am to 4pm.
Pastor Evan Mawarire has risen to prominence in Zimbabwe after an online video he featured in went viral. “Remember this flag, is our flag. No one else loves Zimbabwe more than Zimbabweans. God bless you,” he said.
The hashtag #ThisFlag has been trending ever since. Mawarire was charged with inciting public violence and disturbing the peace, charges later dropped. He is currently in South Africa mobilising support for the movement and meeting exiled Zimbabweans.
“We are scaling the wall of fear in a very big way in Zimbabwe. The goal of this campaign, the This Flag campaign, was to raise more and more Zimbabweans to not be afraid anymore and to spread that message — allow it to catch on like a virus,” Mawarire said.
