The contract extension however was met with stiff resistance from some members of the executive, with some allegedly threatening to resign from their posts ‘since only one person’s views were important against better judgment of other people’.

Club chairman Peter Dube, said to be the only unchallenged voice in the club, chose to be sarcastic when asked about the contract extension yesterday. “I’ve no comment on that, you wrote about this issue a few weeks ago from your sources, are they no longer giving you inside information,” said Dube, who is also the Premier Soccer League chairman.

When pressed further on the club’s position on the imminent expiry of the chief executive officer’s contract Dube said the board was in a better position to talk about the issue, despite all employment issues being the sole responsibility of the executive although they can consult the board.

Board secretary Jimmy Ncube as expected said employment issues fall under the executive portfolio. “The chief executive officer is appointed by the executive, not us,” said Ncube.

This publication however has irrefutable information that the 69 year old respected veteran administrator, who has publicly stated that he has had his run, will continue to be in charge of the Highlanders secretariat until the end of the year.

“It’s a done deal, umdala has had his contract extended against better judgment of other people, including himself. Highlanders is known for democracy but we now have what’s clearly a dictatorship kind of a system where it’s either you’re with those who tell themselves they’re the best thing to happen to Highlanders or you’re seen as a rebel,” said the source.
