Roman Abramovich believes Chelsea’s chances of landing top managerial target Diego Simeone have received a massive boost.

Atletico Madrid have been hit with a transfer ban for the next two windows after they and Real Madrid were punished by FIFA.

That is likely to increase the chances of Atletico boss Simeone moving to the Premier League this summer if his hands are tied on transfers.

Simeone is Chelsea’s No1 choice to take charge this summer with Pep Guardiola lined up to move to Manchester City.

But Chelsea also know the ban – for transfer irregularities on young players – will have a massive impact on their own attempts to sign players.

Atletico were also fined £620,000 and Real got a £250,000 punishment with the ban coming in from the summer. Atletico have promised to appeal.

Chelsea have targeted Atletico star Antoine Griezmann and the Spanish club will be even more determined to keep him now.

Atletico are determined to tie down Griezmann to a new contract and have begun discussions on a two year extension to take him up to 2020 to fend off Chelsea.

They are also unlikely to want to do business on any of their other players with Atletico misfit Jackson Martinez on Chelsea’s radar this summer.

Chelsea striker Diego Costa , who has endured a troubled season, has also been linked with a return to Atletico but that window has now been shut.

That will be a huge blow to Chelsea as they look to wheel and deal in the market after a disastrous season.
