Cassper Nyovest shines at Shoko Festival
HARARE – Award-winning South African hip-hop star Cassper Nyovest made an explosive debut performance at the fifth edition of Shoko Festival on Friday night.
The music star, who reportedly signed what he has described as “the biggest deal for hip-hop ever in the country (South Africa) before he jetted into Zimbabwe,” was clearly in a celebratory mood as he belted hit after hit in what was clearly the best Shoko Festival gig this year.
Thanks to the affordable $5 entry charge, a bumper crowd got the chance to see why some believe Cassper Nyovest is Africa’s biggest hip-hop star.
The crowd went “mad” with delight and danced with abandon as the celebrated star dropped hits such as Phumakimi, which was produced by United States of America-based Zimbabwean producer, Brian Soko, who also co-produced Beyoncé’s Drunk in Love.
Though the performance of the track Gusheshe also raised temperatures on the dance floor, it was the hit Doc Shebeleza that drew the most cheer.
Cassper Nyovest’s slot was supposed to go for just half an hour but the South African generously performed for close to an hour.
Cassper Nyovest was without doubt the star of Shoko Festival 2015 but he was given a good run for his money by compatriot Bucie who thrilled the crowd on the opening night particularly when she dropped her most famous hit Easy To Love. The South African R&B and House singer excited the fairly big crowd with some silky dance moves.
One of the major highlights of the just-ended Shoko Festival was a very strong comedy section in which Doc Vikela, Clive Chigubu, Tol Ass Mo, Simba The Comic King and Deep Fried Man made the revellers laugh no end.
The Zimbabwean comedians had a field day on the President’s recent speech blunder as well as new political parties mushrooming in Zimbabwe.
Shoko Festival, which has over the years brought to Zimbabwe leading international urban acts spanning three continents such as Tumi & the Volume, Tony Rebel, John Vlismas, Akala, Symbiz Sound, KhuliChana, Hip-Hop Pantsula and Rodney P, was organised by Magamba Network with support from the Embassy of Sweden, Danida and Culture Fund Zimbabwe.
