Thieving A’ level student locked up

A Form 6 student at Edgemax College in Chitungwiza was yesterday sentenced to three months in jail for breaking into his friend’s Ecocash shop and stealing two cellphones valued at $100.

Keith Nyakudya (18) of 5254 Unit E in the town told the court that he wanted to sell the two gadgets. Nyakudya pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful entry and theft in aggravating circumstances before Chitungwiza magistrate Mr Lazarus Murendo.

He sentenced him to eight months in prison and conditionally set aside three months for five years. Two months were suspended on condition he pays back $100 to Chrispen Andireya (23) of Zengeza 1 by end of October.

Prosecutor Mrs Ntombikayise Nleya told the court that on June 14 this year at Unit H Shopping Centre, Nyakudya was with his friend Andireya at his workplace where he is employed as an Ecocash Agent.

Andireya left two cellphones inside when they went home after work. The court heard that earlier on, Nyakudya had indicated that he wanted one of the cellphones. Nyakudya accompanied Andireya to the bus stop to board a commuter omnibus on his way home.

After Andireya left, Nyakudya returned to the shop where he used an unknown object to force open the door and stole the cellphones. Andireya discovered the offence when he reported for work the following day.

He confronted Nyakudya who admitted to have committed the offence and apologised, promising to return the cellphones but failed. The matter was reported to the police leading to his arrest. The Herald
