Soul Brothers vocalist David Masondo dies

Reports from South Africa are that Soul Brothers vocalist, David Masondo has died. Nehanda Radio understands he died at the Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg this Sunday afternoon.

The group’s manager Bhodloza Nzimande confirmed the incident on Sunday, saying the band is still in shock.

“We are going to put our heads together and try to see how we can move on as a band.

“We need to take the right decision about the Soul Brothers. It won’t be the same without Masando. He has left an indelible mark in the traditional music landscape,” said Nzimande.

Former Ukhozi FM station manager Bhodloza Nzimande and DJ Linda Sibiya also confirmed the sad news.

Only last month Masondo was admitted to hospital after suffering from fatigue and exhaustion during a live performance.

“We’ve suspended the recording (of the band’s 10th studio album) until he has recovered. David will not be retiring,” the band’s management reassured fans at the time.

Sadly it was not to be.

Background

Soul Brothers have 39 albums in their 39-year music career and were working on their 40th album.

The group has lost three of its founder members and very recently there was an attempt on the life of one of the remaining two founder members Black Moses Ngwenya who was shot at and robbed by gunmen.
