Prisoners break out at Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison

HARARE – Prisoners at the Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison, Zimbabwe’s biggest jail, are reportedly said to have broken out with some having been allegedly killed after the jail guards opened fire.

Contacted for comment by Nehanda Radio, Prison Service spokesperson Elizabeth Banda could not confirm nor deny that prisoners escaped.

“We are currently in an emergency meeting I will call you,” Banda said.

However one prison guard confirmed that prisoners have escaped.

“There is chaos right now but that is true that many prisoners have escaped. I am not sure about the fact that some have been shot dead. That we have to check first,” he said.

Another top security source told Nehanda Radio no one escaped or was shot dead but that they brought down one of the walls inside. Guards were firing in the air to frighten them.

Prisoners are said to be complaining about the relish they are being given and the squalid living conditions.
