HARARE – President Robert Mugabe confronted expelled former ZANU PF secretary for administration, Didymus Mutasa over alleged abuse of party funds raised to bankroll the youth and women’s conference in August last year.
Mugabe, attacking Mutasa for the first time since his expulsion, said the former secretary and minister in charge of state security failed to account for the funds and this was a potential problem that may lead to Mutasa’s arrest.
“We are saying today the Gamatox wanted to overthrow the president, wanted even to kill. You remember at the meeting of the youths they had not even prepared for it. They had not even bought any food and now we discover that money that had been given towards congress…..where did it go?”
“Those are the things we are now discovering and once we discover that the money was misused, vanofira Mujeri. You are not there to be cheating and cheating and cheating and even cheating at the highest level of the politburo, vanoita divert funds.”
Mugabe said Mutasa failed to account for the funds when he was questioned.
“Ndakatindiratidzei mari, takaitacommittee imi (VaMutasa) makange muri mucommittee ye finance,organising for women’s and youths conference andcongress. What money did you get…..Ahh handina kunyatsoziva bvunzai ngana nangan, but you were aware..” Mugabe said.
The state media also said Mugabe took swipe at a director in the ministry of finance who has been diverting the ministry’s funds to dubious bank accounts. The director has since been arrested.
