Kasukuwere, Chombo scoff at Mutasa

By Lloyd Mbiba

HARARE – Ignatius Chombo, the Zanu PF secretary for administration and political commissar Savior Kasukuwere, vowed that they would not recuse themselves from the disciplinary hearing of former Presidential Affairs minister Didymus Mutasa.

Speaking on the sidelines of a clean-up campaign in Harare’s Central Business District, Kasukuwere said Zanu PF would move forward with the removal of “bad apples”.

“Zanu PF is moving forward. We will move on with the cleansing of the party. We will clean the city and the party,” Kasukuwere said.

Chombo said people should allow the disciplinary committee to do its work without speculating about its mandate.

“There is a big misconception,” Chombo said. “This disciplinary committee is a standing committee that will be there for the next five years. It has not been installed to deal with an individual but all the disciplinary cases of the party.

“So let’s not speculate about the committee. Allow it to carry out its work and when we have come up with resolutions, we will come back to you.”

President Robert Mugabe last week established a disciplinary committee led by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko to deal with Mutasa’s issue.

Other members of the committee are Patrick Chinamasa, secretary for legal affairs; Kembo Mohadi, secretary for security; and Mugabe’s wife Grace, who is also chairperson of the women’s league. Mutasa had said Kasukuwere, Chombo, and the First Lady should recuse themselves from the disciplinary hearing as they actively participated in dethroning him.

Mutasa told the Daily News this week that he would attend the hearing out of respect for Mugabe.

“Well, I shall attend the meeting out of respect for the president who is the sole legal official of the party,” Mutasa said.

“I shall request that some members of the committee who have shown extreme hatred for me be left out of the committee.

“There is more that I want to say in the future following receipt of their invitation (to the disciplinary hearing),” he added. Daily News
