Whatmore, who replaces the sacked Stephen Mangongo, will take charge of the Chevrons at the 2015 World Cup to be hosted by Australia and New Zealand starting on the 14th of February.

Speaking at a press conference in Harare today, Whatmore outlined his immediate objectives of guiding the Chevrons to the Super 8 of the 2015 World Cup.

Zimbabwe Cricket Chairman, Wilson Manase said they are delighted to appoint Whatmore who boasts of an impressive cv that includes winning the 1996 World Cup with Sri Lanka.

“His initial assignment is to see us through the World Cup, and thereafter we shall work out another long-term contract,” Manase told reporters in Harare.

Zimbabwe will compete in Pool B of the International Cricket Council World Cup with South Africa, India, West Indies, Ireland, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, the team Whatmore led from 2012 until his contract ended this year.

Zimbabwe is one of the ICC’s test nations.

“Our first target is to make that Super 8,” Whatmore said at the press conference. “We will work really hard to try to achieve that. I am very pleased to be here.”

Whatmore has also coached Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.
