HARARE – The family of former Studio 263 actress, Pretty Xaba, who succumbed to cancer in India on Saturday, say they need about $7,000 to repatriate her body for burial in Zimbabwe.

Xaba died on Saturday afternoon at the BLK Super Speciality Hospital in New Delhi in India where she was being treated for cancer of the oesophagus.

“Mai Muwengwa”, as she was affectionately known because of her role on Studio 263, flew to India for the surgery which was, however, delayed after experts observed that the tumour had grown bigger.

Xaba’s sister-in-law, Ruth, said they needed $7,000 to settle outstanding hospital fees and cargo fees to transport her body.

“We need the money to settle hospital bills. She was on life support for the past two days and the money she had there wasn’t enough.

“Money is also needed for the funeral parlour where her body is being held, waiting for repatriation and cargo fees,” she said.

Xaba appealed to those who wanted to help repatriate Pretty’s body to chip in with whatever they could.

“I’d like to thank the people of Zimbabwe who helped us when she needed to go to travel to India. Once again, I’d like to appeal to them to help the family repatriate Pretty’s body in any way. We’re looking forward to her coming back and finally resting at home,” Xaba said.

Asked about funeral arrangements, Xaba said they were waiting for Pretty’s brother to arrive from the Democratic Republic of Congo to finalise arrangements.

“We’re waiting for her brother, Vusa, to arrive from the DRC where he works. After his arrival we shall know when and where she’ll be buried,” she said.

Mourners are gathered in Eastlea, at number 42 Rayamm Road in Harare.

Messages of condolence from fellow artistes continue pouring in on social networking sites with many describing her as an iconic teacher who was an inspiration.

“I’m deeply grieved to hear of aunt Pretty Xaba’s passing after her long battle with cancer. I’m much honoured to have worked with her in several productions and having a good relationship off work.

“I’ll never forget what a great person and source of inspiration she was, the laughs, the advice and the gossiping among other things. She’ll always be remembered,” posted Small House Saga actress, Eve Mwatse on her Facebook page.

Local comedian Q the Boss also expressed grief at the passing of Pretty saying she had however fought a great fight.

Many actors also thanked actor Taonga Mafundikwa for the role he played in attempting to save Xaba’s life.

“Special mention to a man I respect so much for helping with Pretty’s situation, Taonga Mafundikwa for attempting to have Pretty with us up to the time of her passing. Keep up the philanthropic spirit,” wrote Setfree Mafukidze. The Chronicle
