HARARE – Harare magistrate Tendai Mahwe on Monday fined ex-Sunday Mail editor Edmund Kudzayi $150 for contravening the Firearms Act.
If he fails to pay the fine, he will be jailed for four months.
Kudzayi is also facing charges of insurgency, terrorism, banditry, sabotage, and attempting to subvert a constitutionally-elected government.
The State alleges that Kudzayi was the brains behind the infamous Facebook character Baba Jukwa.
He was yesterday convicted of failing to safeguard firearms after he was found with several rounds of ammunition in unsecured places.
Kudzayi, who pleaded guilty to the crime, was ordered by Mahwe to surrender the firearm to the State.
In passing his sentence, Mahwe considered that Kudzayi was a first time offender and that he did not waste the court’s time.
In mitigation, Kudzayi said he had forgotten to leave the ammunition in a locked place because he had been distracted by prayers he was having.
On June 19, detectives led by chief superintendent Mukazhi went to Kudzayi’s Eastlea home looking for the then Sunday Mail editor.
When Mukazhi and his team arrived, Kudzayi was not around but they saw his father and were ushered into the house.
A search was carried out in Kudzayi’s room. Four by nine millimetre rounds of ammunition were recovered, placed on top of a table where they were not properly secured.
On the same day, the detectives proceeded to his work place at Herald House but they could not find him.
Mukazhi and team searched Kudzayi’s office and recovered nine by nine millimetre rounds of ammunition in an unlocked table drawer. Daily News
