Prominent Harare lawyer and the MDC-T’s spokesman for Harare province, Obert Gutu has reportedly thrown his hat into the ring to contest the treasurer-general’s position at the party’s congress in Harare next month.

Up until now, Gutu, was believed to be vying to become the next spokesperson of the party led by former trade unionist and Prime Minister in the inclusive government, Morgan Tsvangirai.

Nehanda Radio can exclusively reveal that Gutu has in the past month been inundated with requests from senior politicians in the MDC-T and grassroots members to run for the top finance job.

Gutu will emerge as a serious threat to Women’s Assembly boss, Theresa Makone who has been campaigning for the post since she was appointed acting treasurer-general soon after Elton Mangoma was suspended by the MDC-T early this year.

The former Energy Minister has joined forces with former secretary-general, Tendai Biti to front a political movement called the MDC Renewal Team.

A source close to Gutu told Nehanda Radio on Wednesday that the Tsvangirai loyalist has apparently agreed to take up the challenge and contest against Makone, another powerful figure in the party.

Gutu is believed to have told close colleagues that ‘he’s going for it’ after getting assurances that he has the support from the provinces to pull off a surprise during the congress in October.
