A newspaper notice from the department which is responsible for recording births, deaths and marriages claimed most of these Asian men want to use Zimbabwean women to gain citizenship in the country.

“The Registrar General wishes to inform the public that there are some foreigners particularly Asians who want to masquerade as Zimbabweans whilst holding fraudulently acquired Zimbabwean documents.

“We have been having problems with people from Bangladesh. Some of them contract marriages with our local women, others even go as far as contracting customary marriages,” the notice said.

Mudede urged women to liaise with registration offices to, “thoroughly scrutinize of all foreigners who are intending to marry Zimbabwean women.”

“These foreigners should have been cleared by the Immigration Department, the Police and their Embassy before entering into such marriages.

“Marriage officers are strictly advised to be on the lookout when dealing with foreigners intending to marry locals,” Mudede said.

“We are also calling for chiefs and village heads to be extremely vigilant within their areas of any couples involving a foreigner wishing to marry in their areas of jurisdiction,” he added.
