The unsuspecting duo, Oliver Makombero (42) and Aleck Mazavamombe (26) of 1408, of Tynwald, Harare, were arrested at Sakubva Musika on January 16 after police received a tip-off and ambushed them.

The two were, on December 8, given the truck by the owner, Mr George Phiri, to transport his goods to Marondera before they diverted the route and proceeded to Mutare. Sensing danger, Mr Phiri reported the matter to Avondale Police Station.

Police Sakubva received a tip-off from a Mutare resident who had seen the truck which had been published as a stolen vehicle parked at Sakubva Musika.

Officer-in-charge at Sakubva Police Station Chief Inspector Nyasha Chikono teamed up with two plainclothes police officers. They first ambushed Makombero who came to the truck at around 6pm before they arrested Mazavamombe about 40 minutes later.

“Mazavamombe was violent and resisted arrest before police overpowered and arrested him.

“Members of the public who watched the arrest could not intervene. We appeal to members of the public to assist police to effect an arrest than merely watching,” said Manicaland provincial police spokesman Inspector Enock Chishiri.

Tafadzwa Patrick, who is son to Mr Phiri, was visibly joyful to reunite with the stolen vehicle and said he was happy with the tremendous job police had done. Manica Post
