Karukai Matsvake of Rugare Village under Chief Garahwa is recuperating under guard at Chipinge District Hospital after jumping from a truck that was taking prisoners and suspects to Mandikisi Prison.

The incident happened when the truck arrived at the prison complex.

He was not asked to plead when he appeared before Mr Makamera Waini.

Prosecuting, Mr Alfred Chimwara said on January 15, Matsvake was sleeping with his wife, Beauty, and their two daughters, Delight and Agnes, when he woke up at around 1am.

“It is alleged that Matsvake went outside the house and pulled off a machete that was placed between the roof of their bedroom hut and the wall.

“He went back inside the bedroom where his wife and his two daughters were in deep sleep. He then struck Delight and Agnes using the machete.

The two daughters died on the spot. He went on to strike Beauty all over her body and left her seriously injured. She screamed for help and neighbours who responded to her distress calls rushed her to St Peter’s Mission Hospital for treatment,” said Mr Chimwara.

His motive of the attack was not ascertained.

Matsvake is expected back in the dock on January 31 for initial remand. Manica Post
