The unspoken succession battle in Zimbabwe’s ruling party has gone public and the party is struggling to limit the damage.

“It does not matter whether the elections were chaotic or not. What is important is that Mother [Mujuru] is now as good as the next President.” A loyalist to Vice President Joice Mujuru being quoted by a local weekly newspaper.

“What the politburo agreed was disregarded. They are in charge of the whole process and created their own registers in order to disenfranchise rival supporters,” Zanu PF member of a faction calling itself Mugabe Five Year Team.

“There is maximum co-operation from CIO and police.” Dzikamai Mavhaire (Energy Minister on the Central Intelligence Organisation, Police, District Administrator’s office and war veterans being roped in to facilitate the voting process.

“I am aware that some inconveniences could have been caused by inadequate provision of transport, late arrival of ballot papers and inaccuracies in some registers. Corrective measures were promptly taken where applicable.
