Teamwork the secret to great success
By Dr James Madzimure
I am going to share with you some information on teamwork we have learnt in leadership. God is looking for team players to bring out the hidden potential in many nations. Even Zimbabwe needs teamwork in politics and religious activities in order to succeed.
A team is meant to bring synergy which is the highest activity of life because no one can ever attain goals alone.
Even child bearing is teamwork between a man and woman. In order to operate at the highest level you need people. There is a riddle which says a stick in a bundle cannot be easily broken.
In Genesis 11: 1-9, there is the story of the tower of Babylon which was built by teamwork and imagination. Wise people have come to appreciate that in teamwork nothing is impossible. Leadership performance is hinged on teamwork. You need collective intelligence through creating winning teams.
It has been said that when you work with a committee or team without commitment, it will commit you to failure.
A winning team solves many complex problems. It is striking to note that the creator of face book, Mark Zuckerberg was a 19 year old first year student at Havard University who was sharing ideas with friends.
Two (God fearing and purpose oriented) are better than one; they warm and help each other (Ecclesiastes 4: 9-12). A team is a living, constantly changing force. When the river is not flowing, it becomes a pond, contaminated and smelling.
The word team can be broken down to mean:
T – Together
E – Everyone
A – Achieves
M – More
According to Acts 4: 32-34, the church started as a team of believers. This means that the foundation of Christianity was found on teamwork or community. The principle was that we are a family. As Pastors we have often said that when you hide from each other, you are not living right and you will soon fall. People need to avail their intelligence and time for team building. If you win and your brother loses, you are also a loser.
As a leader, the measure of success is not what you have acquired but what you have helped other people to become in life. A successful team has one heart beat. As a team you can direct raw materials as objects for success. Conflict is unavoidable in a team but different perspectives should not generate problems. A variety of ideas are needed for success.
This implies that you can be convinced to drop your idea and buy someone’s to attain greatness. I enjoyed the five years during which political parties in Zimbabwe have worked as a team in the Government of National Unity (GNU) because it brought checks and balances. Even the country enjoyed considerable economic stability and a bit of growth.
Moses and Aaron worked as a team. Moses did not have all it takes to fulfil the vision – he had no eloquence but Aaron had. We believe God will always inspire us with a vision greater than us. You can not be a liability in a winning team but an asset. You must give something to qualify to receive something. We do not want a relationship between a cup and a pot in a team. Only a cup can enter a pot and not vice versa.
We must realize that working together works. In the Christian circles we say that Christ is the head of the church and we are the body of Christ. The body can never survive apart from the head hence you need to be grafted in the vine. The lamb was slain to receive power, wealth, wisdom, strength, honour and praise (Revelations 5: 11).
Commit yourself to make the team successful by giving your time, money, intelligence, talent, relationships and connections, protecting the integrity and name of the organization. There is need for individual commitment to a groups’ effort. Every member in a team should be treated with respect and dignity. This is one blunder committed by the GNU in Zimbabwe.
Teamwork represents values that cultivate good behaviour such as listening. We need to listen to points of view of others in a team and give everyone the benefit of doubt. Provide support to those who need it. In a team, each player should enjoy the support of others to achieve goals. Teamwork operates at 3 levels:
“Coming together is the beginning, keeping together is progress and working together is success,” Henry Ford.
Teamwork maximizes the leader’s potential and the weakness is minimized. There is need for team members to share the blame for failure or success to avoid arrogance or pride. We should all realize that the path to greatness is along with others.
A winning team
A winning team is known to perform all the time. Seven things that helps a winning team to perform are:
P – Purpose and values
E – Empowerment (training, delegated authority and information)
R – Relationships (open communication and encouragement even if one fails – support one another)
F – Flexibility
O – Optimum productivity
R – Recognition and appreciation
M – Moral will be high if you win. People will be enthusiastic of their work.
I believe we are going to establish teamwork in our organisations and nations in order to reach new horizons.
