Lewisam parents protest borehole levy

Parents with children at Lewisam Primary School in Chisipite this week protested against the school authorities for barring their children from attending classes over a ‘borehole’ levy. Pupils were loitering around the school grounds while others were in class.

“They want us to pay a borehole levy on top of the conventional fees and levy. Okay fine, we are willing to pay but don’t you think they must give us a grace period. Schools opened last week and we are still hunting for money,” complained one parent.

The acting school head Mr Chingosho refuted the allegations and said they simply summoned parents of non-paying pupils to iron out differences.

“Well, we simply summoned those parents whose kids are owing us large sums amounting to as much as US$1000. We are not chasing them away over borehole fees as they claim,” he said adding that those pupils who were seen roaming in the school ground were on break time.

The council is doing all it can to avert the disaster but there is need for collective action, given our observation as the MDC Local government secretaries during our tour of the water facilities in Harare.
