Masvingo man killed in beer dispute

MASVINGO – A 79-year-old man from Zaka in Masvingo was killed during a fight while coming from a beer drinking session, police confirmed. 

Masvingo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Peter Zhanero said the incident happened on Sunday at about 5pm. He said police have arrested a suspect in connection with the killing of Assa Dzikamai of Dzikamai Village under Chief Ndanga.

He said on the day in question, Dzikamai and John Tototai Maroodze (29) of the same village were drinking traditional beer at Mr Mako Dzowa’s homestead.

“In the middle of the drinking session a misunderstanding ensued between Maroodze and another patron, Lloyd Macharaga (28) over an unknown issue resulting in a fight between the two,” he said.

Insp Zhanero said Dzikamai intervened and the two stopped fighting.

“That gave room for Macharaga who was being overpowered to escape. In a fit of rage, Maroodze turned to Dzikamai accusing him of letting Macharaga escape,” he said.

Insp Zhanero said Maroodze and Dzikamai exchanged harsh words but the argument quickly stopped.

“After the argument Dzikamai and Maroodze left for home in the company of the latter’s brother, Ranganai. While on their way home the dispute between the pair continued and they engaged in a fight,” he said.

“When Ranganai realised that he could not stop them from fighting he rushed back to Mr Dowa’s homestead where he asked for assistance from other patrons. He then teamed up with other revellers and rushed to the scene but failed to locate the pair.”

The following day at about 5am a villager, Mr Emmanuel Vanhuvaone discovered Dzikamai’s lifeless body lying in a rapoko field.

“The body had multiple injuries in the face and head. It was taken to Musiso Hospital for a post-morterm. John Tototai Maroodze has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations. He will appear in court soon to face murder charges,” said Insp Zhanero.
