Batsirai Benjamin Nyabunze (26) applied for a job at CUT as a projects officer. He tendered the fake certificate before information was received that he did not graduate with a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Engineering.

Enquiries by CUT at UZ revealed that he had not graduated leading to his arrest. Nyabunze is held at Chinhoyi Central Police station where he is assisting with investigations. Mashonaland West police spokesperson Inspector Clemence Mabgweazara confirmed the arrest.

He added said Nyabunze would appear in court this week. “We can confirm that we have arrested Batsirai Benjamin Nyabunze in connection with fraud involving use of a fake University of Zimbabwe certificate to secure employment,” he said.

Investigations have revealed that he connived with someone from the UZ Exams Department and imprinted his name on an original graduation certificate.

Armed with the certificate, Nyabunze responded to an advert inserted by CUT sometime in July for the post of projects officer. He was subsequently called for an interview where he was successful.

In October Nyabunze reported for duty where he produced the fake certificate. However, the university later received information that his papers were fake. Investigations revealed Nyabunze enrolled at UZ in 2005 and was there until 2009, but he did not complete the course.
