A website for the Registrar General’s Office meant to help Zimbabweans apply for passports online, crashed on the first day that it was publicised. The website http://www.rg.gov.zw could not cope with the flood of traffic on Thursday.

Zimbabweans wanting to apply for passports can now download application forms on the internet and take them to the passport office after filling them in. On submission they can then pay a US$33 fee for the form.

The link to the RG’s website posted on Nehanda Radio was clicked over 25 000 times by Nehanda Radio readers and listeners in the morning alone. Unfortunately as at 13:25 (GMT) the RG’s website was still offline.

Registrar-General Tobaiwa Mudede said the digitalisation would bring convenience to the public and improve efficiency and reduce time spent queuing for the forms. Under the new system the RG’s office will also be sending SMS messages to passport applicants to collect their documents.
