SPAIN’S ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Pilar Fuertes Ferragut, died in a car accident in Namibia on Monday while on holiday. Ambassador Ferragut was also the Spanish ambassador to Zambia and Malawi.
“The Spanish Embassy wishes to inform you of the tragic passing away of H.E Pilar Fuertes Ferragut, the Ambassador of Spain to Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi who died in a car accident yesterday afternoon,” a statement from embassy read.
On Tuesday Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai paid his condolences on the passing on of Ferragut. While signing the Book of Condolences opened at the Embassy of Spain in Harare, Tsvangirai described the late Ambassador as a loving person who was committed to peace and democracy.
Ferragut helped build a strong relationship for the arts and culture between the two countries. She hosted several functions for local journalists where she briefed them about issues in her country and also arranged cultural events at the annual Harare International Festival of the Arts (HIFA) and Harare Agricultural Show.
All cultural activities of the Embassy of Spain have been cancelled until further notice. Ambassador Ferragut was posted to Zimbabwe in 2009. Details on the repatriation of her body were not immediately available.
