Luke-ing the Beast in the Eye: Remembering Morgan Tsvangirai, the icon

By Luke Tamborinyoka

Today, marks the sixth anniversary of the death of Morgan Tsvangirai, Zimbabwe’s doyen of the democratic struggle. Tsvangirai loved his country and its people and it may have been epiphanic that he died on Valentine’s Day; on the day that the consuming power of love is celebrated worldwide.

Tsvangirai left a rich legacy that is being strenuously torn asunder by the treacherous and mercenary lot among us; the wicked motley that has chosen to be Zanu PF’s willing tool in the macabre plot to decimate the people’s democratic project.

The Morgan Tsvangirai I know must certainly be violently turning in his grave at this unbridled treachery and the annihilation of his legacy by these latter-day Judas Iscariots who jointly and severally are now hobnobbing with ZANU PF to undermine a struggle he founded, cherished and nurtured till his death on St. Valentine’s Day in 2018.

Luke-ing the Beast in the Eye: Morgan Tsvangirai’s June 27 epistle to the people of Zimbabwe

Memory is a site of the struggle. Today is 27 June 2023. In Zimbabwe’s tenuous political story, June 27 is infamous for the bloody violence in the contrived run-off poll of 27 June 2008 in which Zanu PF used massive violence to reverse the 29th March 2008 poll victory by Morgan Tsvangirai.

On 22 June of the same year, Morgan Tsvangirai had pulled out of the violent run-off saying he could not sacrifice the people for power– famously stating that he would not walk to State House on top of dead bodies and graves.

The contrived blood-soaked run-off plebiscite was dismissed by SADC and the AU as a sham, leading to the formation of the inclusive government in February 2009, which government brought the much-needed fillip to the weather-beaten people of Zimbabwe.

Tributes pour for Tsvangirai in memory of 5th anniversary of his death

The struggle for democracy in post-independence Zimbabwe cannot be discussed without the special mention of the late former Prime Minister (2009 to 2013) Morgan Richard Tsvangirai. Today, 14 February 2023, marks exactly five years since the pro-democracy icon died at the age of 65 after reportedly suffering from colorectal cancer.

Luke-ing the Beast in the Eye: Morgan Tsvangirai’s epic speech on epic day

Memory is a site of the struggle. Only in the rubric of yester-year memories can we trace where we have come from so that we use the lessons of the past to forge and sharpen future struggles on the anvil of a history that has been seriously reflected upon.

Exactly 14 years ago to the day, political leaders in Zimbabwe who had tenaciously rivalled for almost a decade turned the proverbial swords into plough shares in what became known as the Global Political Agreement (GPA) which poised our country for peace, growth and development.

Superintended by the regional body SADC in the aftermath of a contested election in which Mr Robert Mugabe had famously lost to his arch-rival Morgan Tsvangirai before engaging in retributive violence on a hapless electorate in a contrived bloody run-off poll, the GPA became a historic backdrop to the consummation of an inclusive government that was to give respite to a despondent nation.

Zanu PF exposes Tsvangirai role in coup

Just before Mugabe resigned, Tsvangirai addressed thousands of people gathered outside Parliament building where he urged the former Zanu PF leader to “step down immediately to avoid impeachment”.

Tribute to Tsvangirai: Chamisa says “struggle is in safe hands”

Today marks exactly four years since Morgan Tsvangirai, the founder of the former main opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) died. Few weeks ago, Chamisa and his members dumped the MDC party and formed the Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC). He said the new party would not abandon Tsvangirai’s legacy.
