HARARE- Police yesterday confirmed the arrest of Tendai Mungororo of Tafara on charges of fatally shooting his brother Tichafunga in the early hours of Sunday morning. Police spokesperson Inspector James Sabau said Tendai Mungororo was facing murder charges and was being held in police cells as investigations continue.
“I can also confirm that the firearm Mungororo used in the murder of his brother was licensed for the purposes of cash-in-transit. We are also getting reports that he was in Rusape for a funeral earlier on the fateful day and had even used the gun to slaughter a beast for mourners,” he said.
Inspector Sabau warned firearm holders against using or carrying firearms on occasions or purposes for which they were not registered saying that was illegal and irresponsible. “The firearm should only be used for the purposes under which it was licensed and not for other reasons,” he said.
“The law does not allow that. Mungororo will be going to court as soon as police complete their investigations.” When The Herald visited the Mungororo family yesterday, the only available family member who was identified as an aunt to the deceased said only one person, Charles, brother to Tichafunga will talk to the Press.
Tendai’s wife also indicated that she did not want to talk to the Press while the deceased’s wife was said to be away. When The Herald finally linked up with Charles, he said he will only be free to talk after the burial of his brother.
“At the moment we are still working on the post-mortem issue before starting burial arrangements, so I cannot say anything. You can get in touch with me after the funeral and we can talk. Police are still carrying out their investigations and I do not want to prejudice them,” he said.
A man from the neighbourhood said Tendai was in the habit of threatening to shoot his brother every time they had a dispute. “I think he had been planning to do it for a long time. There may be more issues than the story of the parking space. I do not buy that,” he said.
