Is raunchy dancer Sandra Ndebele past it?

By Mandla Dingani

Age and motherhood seem to be catching up with the once vibrant Sandra Ndebele as much younger and more creative dancers emerge on the scene. Sandra, or simply Sandy as her fans lovingly call her, has matured with age and appears to be slowing down since she is now a mother of two boys.

Those who have been following her since her formative years will agree that Sandy’s major attraction were her scintillating and high-octane performances but now she seems to have passed the baton to her dancers.

That being said, one needs to appreciate that Sandy cannot be as lively as she was five or so years ago. But one good thing about her is that she is still very much in the game and grooming other talented dancers, who are fast replacing her as lead dancers.

Despite being known for her raunchy dances, Sandy’s show at the City Sports Bar last weekend left many of her fans with the impression that she was now past her prime.

Besides the dancers, Sandy also sought the services of talented guitarist — Rodwell Roda — who thrilled the crowd with his guitar-playing skills.

Asked about the show, which also included ladies of the moment — Beverly Sibanda and Zoey Selani — Sandy said it was not a contest but a joint show to promote different types of dancing.

“I did not see this show as a competition as suggested by some sections of the media. Instead it was a joint event by three different but talented performers,” she said.

Dubbed “The Ladies Affair”, the show was attended by scores of people who filled the venue to capacity. It was a show and a half spiced up by the exploits of Beverly and Zoey — two of the country’s leading pole dancers.

Patrons anticipated a showdown among the trio but sadly Sandy was no match for Zoey and Beverly. Beverly gave her best and literally set the house on fire with her breathtaking act. Zoey also did her thing much to the delight of the crowd.

Her manager, DJ Devante, said Zoey was in a class of her own because she is a professional pole dancer. “I think what makes Zoey different from Sandra or Beverly in particular is that her act is more of aerobics than strip tease,” he said.
