US to keep targeted sanctions on Mugabe regime

The United States has said it will maintain targeted sanctions on members and companies propping up the Mugabe regime. The statement was a response to a so-called anti-sanctions petition championed by Zanu PF this week.

Speaking in Harare US Deputy Assistant Secretary for African affairs Susan Page said the restrictive measures (travel ban and assets freeze) will remain in place until the rule of law and respect for human rights are established.

Page said although they applauded Mugabe’s clear statement on Feb. 26 that violence is unacceptable and will not be tolerated they hoped the Zanu PF leader will convey that message to the police and security services.
