The decision to unveil Zanu PF dictator Robert Mugabe as the patron of the Zimbabwe National Women’s Football team backfired as the hosts lost 0-3 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana at Rufaro Stadium.
The Mighty Warriors as they are called took on their neighbours from South Africa in a Unity Cup International Challenge match before a sizeable crowd that included Mugabe. They lost 4-0 in the return leg and were hoping to overturn the deficit on home soil.
The Mighty Warriors succumbed to three first-half goals and failed to creep back into the match. On the score sheet for Banyana Banyana was captain Noko Matlou who scored first before they were gifted an own goal by defender Lynette Mutokuto and a chip from midfielder Amanda Dlamini rounded things.
Mighty Warriors’ coach Rosemary Mugadza said the result — although a big disappointment — helped her in the assessment of the team ahead of the upcoming All-Africa Games qualifiers early next year. “The first 20 minutes, we played according to the game plan, but the defenders lost concentration,” said Mugadza.
