Motorist raped by policeman after crash

A traffic cop reportedly demanded a bribe before he raped a motorist he had arrested for drinking and driving. Hlabanyana Qiniso (38) reportedly arrested the 41-year-old woman after an accident and demanded US$100 to let her go.

It is alleged that he raped her when she refused to give him the money. Qiniso was yesterday not asked to plead to two charges of aggravated indecent assault and rape when he appeared before Harare magistrate Ms Vongai Muchuchuti.

Ms Muchuchuti remanded him in custody to December 10 and advised him to apply for bail at the High Court due to the gravity of the allegations. Mr Everson Chatambudza of Nyikadzino, Koworera and Associates is representing Qiniso.

Prosecutor Ms Tendai Chiduwa alleges that on November 21 Qiniso attended an accident scene in the city. He took the woman who was involved in an accident to Harare Central Police Station for a breathalyser test, it is alleged. The court heard that at the station Qiniso demanded US$100 so as not to open a docket.

It is alleged that when she refused, Qiniso left and returned dressed in civilian clothing before ordering the woman to drive him back to the accident scene. The State says he directed her to a lodge near the accident scene, paid US$10 at the reception and proceeded upstairs with the unsuspecting woman.

Allegations are he pushed her into a room and locked the door. It is alleged that he forced her to perform oral sex on him and then told her he wanted full intercourse. The court was told that she begged for mercy and when he refused, she asked him to at least use protection. The cop allegedly left her locked in the room and returned with condoms after which he raped her once.

When he released her, it is alleged, she told her husband who made a police report.
