There is never a shortage of the village clown, always ready to bring embarrassment and shame to the community. As Madagascar prepares to host the 45th Southern African Development Community (SADC) Ordinary Summit of Heads of State and Government on 17 August 2025, there is a remarkable calm and focus in the country.

HARARE - The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has publicly voiced its "profound concern" regarding the United States' imposition of new import tariffs, directly contradicting a recent unilateral decision by its current chair, Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

HARARE - Rwanda has formally rejected the resolutions made during the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit held in Harare, Zimbabwe, on January 31, 2025.

Tendai Ruben Mbofana: "Nonetheless, facts are stubborn, and the truth is that SADC is a useless body and will always be useless as long as the original SADC Tribunal is not brought back. What is the point in having an organization that can not even enforce its own rules? Why bother formulating a treaty and protocols when members states are not compelled to follow them?"

I came across a video of an address by an unnamed ruling ZANU PF official to a group of rural villagers. In his little speech, he glorified President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa as a hero for being elected the chairman of the SADC (Southern African Development Community). He disingenuously portrayed this as some form of electoral victory over other regional leaders."
