A policeman, accused of raping three minors, last week appeared before a Harare Magistrate facing allegations of rape. Alfonso Manganda (34) was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Mr. Rogers Kachambwa who remanded in custody to September 8 for trial.

Mr. Kachambwa advised Manganda to apply for bail at the High Court. Prosecutor Mrs. Valerie Kativhu Ngoma alleges that on days unknown to the state but in 2009, Manganda summoned the first juvenile who is six-years-old to his room. He is alleged to have removed the minor’s clothes and raped her several times.

The court heard that Manganda would call the child into his room and kiss her. It is also alleged that on dates unknown to the State, but between January and August 2010, Manganda summoned a seven-year-old girl to his room and raped her several times. The court heard that during that same period, Manganda used to force another eight-year-old girl to have sex with him.

He would threaten the minors with death if they reported him. The matter came to light when the brother of the two minors peeped through Manganda’s room and saw him raping his sisters. The brother is alleged to have told his mother who then reported the matter to the police leading to Manganda’s arrest. A medical report will be used as evidence in court.
