Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai says the African extended family system is the best form of unstructured social security and support and that family unity is essential in times of tragedy. The Prime Minister made these remarks as he consoled Sungura music icon Tongai “Dhewa” Moyo at this Msasa Park home in Kwekwe yesterday following the death of his wife Barbara Muchengeti who committed suicide last week.

“I understand the pain that one goes through after losing a loved one having lost a lovely wife myself last year. I urge you to accept the verdict, find your feet and start walking this long painful road without her,” said the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister said Tongai and the two children, Tanaka (6) and Nicole (4) need all the support during this very trying time and he urged relatives and friends to stop adding salt to injury by making careless and uninformed statements relating to the sad passing of  Barbara.

“Dambudziko ratinarwo isu vanhu nderekutaura taura zvisizvo nezvimwe zvisinei nesu. Pano tauya kuzochema ngatiitei zvekuchema – our problem also as people is that we take pleasure in gossiping about issues that do not concern us. We came here to mourn and just mourn we must,” said the Prime Minister to a round of applause.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by Minister Nelson Chamisa Deputy Ministers Murisi Zwizvai, Cecil Zvidazi, Dr. Mudzingwa and Chief Secretary to the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers, Ian Makone.

Speaking at the same occasion, music superstar Oliver Mtukudzi recounted his relationship Tongai dating back to more than 20 years. He urged Tongai to remain focused in the face of adversity emanating from some sections of the local media.

“Mamwe mapepa nhau atinoziva aripo pakutsondora vanhu. Ngwarira kubviswa maziso ako pabasa rawakatarisana naro – some newspapers that we all know exist for the purpose of denigrating people; be careful not to be swayed from the task at hand,” said Tuku.

Barbara Moyo will be buried this weekend.
