ZAPU congratulates the ANC

The Zimbabwe African People’s Union (ZAPU) congratulates the African National Congress, (ANC) on their 98th Anniversary.

The ANC formed on the 8th of January in 1912 is one of the first, original and oldest authentic African liberation movements. The ANC and ZAPU share scars, friendship and cooperation dating back a number of decades.

In 1966 ZIPRA and Umkhonto WeSizwe military commanders based themselves in Zambia and conducted reconnaissance operations into Rhodesia, in the liberation struggles for both Zimbabwe and South Africa.

In 1967, Umkhonto WeSizwe and ZIPRA guerrillas crossed the Zambezi into the then Rhodesia to open a way home for MK. The MK-ZAPU force fought
fearlessly and fiercely against the combined South African and Ian Smith forces.

ABOUT ZAPU

ZAPU formed in 1961 is the first party to fight for democracy, liberation and human rights for all Zimbabwe regardless of colour, tribe, region  or language.

We established relations with authentic African liberation movements and the rest of the world over the years based on our sound policies under the leadership of the late Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo.

In 1979, ZAPU signed the Lancaster agreement as part of the Patriotic Front leading to Zimbabwe’s independence. In 1980, we joined a Government of National Unity (GNU) but were dismissed in 1982 when Mugabe started cracking down on our supporters and persecuting our leadership.

After Mugabe killed more than 20,000 of innocent and defenceless civilian ZAPU supporters, we entered into a unity accord in 1987 to save lives, national prosperity, peace and stability. Since 1987, ZANU continued to
violate the unity agreement.

ZAPU pulled out of the Unity Accord on 16th May 2009 and is now actively reviving its structures and engaging membership both in Zimbabwe and internationally. ZAPU is now the opposition party in Zimbabwe with an important constituency. www.zapu.org.uk.
