Girl (7) raped for freeze-it, court told

A HARARE man accused of sexually abusing a seven-year-old girl in Glen View 1 after he lured her to his house to get a freeze-it yesterday appeared before a Harare magistrate facing rape charges.

Andrew Phiri (34) was not asked to plead when he appeared before magistrate Mr Peter Kumbawa who remanded him in custody to December 10 for trial.

He was instructed to apply for bail at the High Court, which has jurisdiction over such matters.

Prosecutor Ms Edith Kakuruwo told the court that on November 24 Phiri called the minor to his house where he sells freeze-its.

The State alleges that Phiri took the minor into his bedroom where he stripped her naked and threw her on the bed.

The court heard that the accused covered the minor’s mouth with his palm and raped her.

The accused allegedly warned the minor that he would hit her if she told anyone what had happened.

On December 1, a neighbour, Melody Chinyoka noticed the child having difficulties in walking and on questioning the minor, she said she had been raped.

A police report was made leading to Phiri’s arrest. The Herald
