ALTHOUGH the message of his rumoured death came as great shock and disappointment to him, Oliver Mtukudzi still laughs at the matter and says he could have left something special for his fans if it had turned out to be true.
He could have left two complete albums that would have become rare and special posthumous releases. Mtukudzi revealed this at the sidelines of his 57th birthday bash at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton recently.
He said he had already recorded two albums and is just waiting for the most opportune time to unleash one of them. But that might not be anytime soon since the release would be dependant on the performance of his latest album, Dairai, on the market.
The musician says the album is still faring well and there is no need to rush for another release.
“Two albums are ready. Even if I had died as some people wished or if I were to die tomorrow, my fans would still get the albums albeit from a dead man,” he said humorously.
The musician says the recording of the two albums has not stopped him from working on new material, which means that he will always have something waiting in the wings.
If he maintains the trend, people are assured of at least one new album from Mtukudzi after his death.
The musician says he does not want to put himself under pressure which is why he always makes sure that there is an album ready for release anytime.
“Even if I was asked to release an album today, you would get it on the market tomorrow,” he said.
But he still has one question for the person who originated his death rumour: “What was the motive?”
“I was not even sure whether I was dead or alive when my phone was inundated with calls from friends and relatives seeking to confirm the rumour.
“I cannot think of how a person can start spreading such lies.”
Ironically, the musician added another year to his life tally on Tuesday and the recent bash was an exceptional celebration.
Speaking at the sidelines of the bash, Mtukudzi’s wife Daisy showered her husband with praises.
“He is morally different from most of the local musicians.
“Very few get to his age and I thank God for giving me such a husband.
“People wish him dead but only God has authority over life. I wish him many more years and more strength to keep his music alive,” she said.
The two-day bash saw fans from all walks of life thronging the centre with their cheers and presents.
It was held on a Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
The musician said he wanted to cater for fans of all ages and backgrounds through the double gig.
“Some enjoy the night shows and others are comfortable with afternoon outings that they can attend with their families.
“We tried to cater for both audience sects,” said Mtukudzi.
The Friday gig witnessed a massive attendance while the Saturday one had its share of pomp and funfair as children had a chance to play games and dance to live music as they wished the music icon a happy birthday.
The ceremony was sealed with fireworks that lit the dark sky with multi-colours, much to the delight of the partying kids.
It was indeed an event to remember.
Other musicians that helped lighten up the party included Diva Mafunga, Steve Makoni, Sebastian Magacha, Bob Nyabinde, Victor Kunonga, Chiedza Chevatendi, Tendai Manatsa and Selmor Mtukudzi. Source: Zimbabwe Standard
