UK fundraiser for murdered Zimbabwean

By Mike Grienshields

Young people around Slough in the United Kingdom have rallied together to celebrate the life of Tarirai Ransome Munjanja, a Zimbabwean who was murdered in a knife attack last week.

Friends of the 23-year-old, also known as ‘Terry’, have organised a fundraising night in his memory and to raise awareness of knife crime.

The event will be held at the Eco Bar in the High Street on Friday night. Entrance is £3 and all money raised will be donated to Mr Munjanja’s family, who are planning to fly his body back to Zimbabwe.

Close friend Tendai Mucheri, 22, said: “Terry was a really popular person and so many people have said that they want to pay their respects. He always said that he would want people to have a party for him if he died early, and we are going to honour that. Flying the body back to Zimbabwe is going to be very expensive and we are hoping to raise as much money as we can to give to the family.”

Al Kudakwashe Pratt, 22, added: “I have kown Terry’s family for ten years and his mother has always opened her heart and home to all of us and we feel that we would like to express our love back to her by helping her out during this difficult time. Knife crime destroys families and we want to get that message across to as many people as possible.”

Eco Bar manager Vijay Kapur said: “When his friends approached us about the evening we were more than happy to help. We are a part of the community and this is the perfect way to help a grieving family. We will also be making a contribution to the event once all the money has been counted.”

Background

Munjanja died after he was stabbed in the stomach during a fight in Berkshire. He was found by emergency services in Bradley Road, Baylis, Slough, on Saturday night.

He was taken to Wexham Park Hospital where he died. Police believe he died from injuries he sustained during a fight and have appealed for another man who was involved to “give himself up”.

Det Ch Insp Mick Saunders said: “This appears to have been an entirely pointless loss of life and we are following one distinct line of enquiry to trace a named individual involved in the altercation on (last) Saturday evening.

Daniel Tulloch, 36, of Bradley Road, has been arrested and charged with murder.

He was denied bail and will appear before Reading Crown Court on September 14.
