“When you think it’s over, it starts again” – Kelly Khumalo on Senzo Meyiwa trial

South African singer Kelly Khumalo says she does not follow proceedings in the ongoing trial on the death of her late boyfriend Senzo Meyiwa, as doing so would take a great toll on her mental health.

Meyiwa was fatally shot in the chest when two intruders allegedly entered the family home of his then girlfriend, Khumalo, in Vosloorus in October 2014 while he was relaxing with her and other friends.

Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya, Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi, Mthobisi Prince Mncube, Mthokoziseni Maphisa and Sifisokuhle Nkani Ntuli are standing trial for the murder of the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana footballer.

In an interview with Ukhozi FM, Khumalo said she had decided to stay away from the trial and leave everything in God’s hands.

“For me to keep sane, and for me to remain in place of faith and trusting God. I have to stay away from the noise and wait for God to prevail,” she said.

“It becomes a reminder of something that didn’t sit right with you at all. When you think it’s over, it starts over, so you must stay away for your mental health and wait for God’s time.

“God is not a man that he should lie, so you remain and hold on to that and trust the process.”

In March it was revealed that two of the five men accused of killing Meyiwa, Ntanzi and Sibiya, confessed that they had been paid R100 000 for his murder by Khumalo.

In his confession statement, Ntanzi claimed that Khumalo wanted Meyiwa killed, among other reasons, because he had promised her money and failed to deliver.

“She further alleged that he [Meyiwa] promised to marry her, but he’s no longer interested and he also hid that he had a wife back home in Durban,” read the statement.

“The guys told her that for a person of Senzo Meyiwa’s status, an amount of R400 000 is necessary. She stood up and chat on the phone and again called our leaders Mtokoziseng, Caros and Mabungu [sic].

“There was a disagreement of the price, Kelly Khumalo told us that the only money available was R250 000 upon completion of the assignment and the rest of the money will follow in two instalments within two months.” Telly Africa
