Malunga publishes research on Gukurahundi, explains Mnangagwa role

Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) director and top human rights lawyer Siphosami Malunga has published a research paper on the 1983-7 Gukurahundi Massacres explaining the role of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Malunga described the bloodbath as a war crime committed by the Zanu-PF government in its quest to establish Shona hegemony in the country.

While death is ordinarily and perhaps universally greeted with sombernes and sorrow, the recent and rapid deaths of the Zanu-PF bigwigs have elicited polarized and starkly contrasting emotions among Zimbabweans. Evidence that even the most sacred of our cultural customs and moral principles are not immune from our divisive politics.

On the one hand are the ruling party members and supporters who are solemnly mourning their fallen leaders. On the other hand are Zanu-PF opponents who seem to be celebrating or at least swearing that they will not mourn the deaths of their oppressors.

I was traveling to Bulawayo in September 1983 on Shushine Bus 84 when we were stopped by a Gukurahundi platoon. All passengers with Ndebele names were asked to leave the bus while those with Shona names were allowed to proceed.

I shudder to this day, and can imagine that their lives and those of their families were impoverished (by the breadwinners’ imminent deaths), lives were cut short, in a nasty brutal way (for that was the killers’ trademark) and the country was impoverished by their loss.

Shiri was poisoned: Family

The family of the late Agriculture minister Perrance Shiri (pictured) said it suspected that he could have succumbed to food poisoning, not COVID-19.Shiri died yesterday morning while being taken to a Chinese facility for treatment of suspected COVID-19, but the family yesterday said he died after severe vomiting and was showing symptoms consistent with food poisoning.
