Rwanda’s president said the international community “failed all of us”, as he marked 30 years since the 1994 genocide that killed around 800,000 people. President Paul Kagame addressed dignitaries and world leaders who had gathered in Rwanda’s capital, Kigali, to commemorate the bloodshed.
Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame has said he would return money to the UK if no asylum seekers are sent to his country under his deal with the government. The UK has paid £240m to Rwanda, with a further £50m to come. So far, no asylum seekers have been sent to the country.
Burundi has closed its borders with Rwanda after accusing its neighbour of funding rebel attacks. Last December Red Tabara, a Burundian rebel group, killed 20 people near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
