The ruling Zanu PF party is being accused of bullying thousands of Zimbabwean teachers who failed to report to work on Monday protesting over poor salaries.
The crunch meeting between government and civil servants ended in a deadlock yesterday after the workers rejected a “paltry” 25% offer tabled by their employer.
Government has tabled a new salary offer to its workers that will see the least paid teacher earn about $19 975, including a 10% risk allowance and shut the door for further negotiations.
Zimbabwe’s public sector unions yesterday demanded that government pays their wages in United States dollars and threatened to go on strike, adding to the problems facing President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration as it struggles to revive the economy.
The cash-strapped Zanu PF government has brought forward January pay dates for civil servants in a desperate attempt to appease restless public sector workers who will join a growing strike if the government does not agree to pay them in U.S. dollars.
The government has said the 17,5 percent allowance awarded to civil servants was not a one-off payment. This comes amid claims that it was a vote-catching gimmick ahead of the July 30 vote.
Teachers will be taking to the streets on Friday to protest against government’s offer of increasing their salaries by 15 percent, saying the effort fell far too short of their expectations.
Pay talks between government and civil servants on Tuesday did not produce any breakthrough, amid reports the negotiations will resume in January next year.
