Survey shows Chamisa leading Mnangagwa if presidential elections were held now

Dr Phillan Zamchiya

Dear Reader,

The Mass Public Opinion Institute (MPOI) released the Afro-barometer round nine survey on Zimbabwe on 15 June 2022.

The survey shows the incipient decline of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF)’s leader, Emmerson Mnangagwa, and the rise of Nelson Chamisa the leader of opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC).

If presidential elections were to be held at this juncture, the ZANU PF leader will lose to the CCC leader. The survey signals that 33 % of respondents would vote for Chamisa against 30% for Mnangagwa.

The problem with this is that in the end, no one is really sure who that person is.

MDC ‘abandoned the work in the streets’

It must be borne in mind that the surveys were conducted during the period of the inclusive government, when it is rather dangerous for people to be frank and open about their political preferences, especially in terms of their support for either Zanu (PF) or the MDC.

Tsvangirai favourite despite popularity drop

Bulawayo – Support for Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai plunged by 21 percentage points from 57 percent in May 2009 to 36 percent in October 2010 but he remains favourite to win a presidential vote in Zimbabwe today, according to the latest survey by polling group Afrobarometer.
