Kenya’s supreme court has said it annulled presidential elections held in August because the polls were “neither transparent nor verifiable” and blamed the country’s electoral commission for the shortcomings.
Obert Gutu – The MDC welcomes the ruling of the Supreme Court in Kenya on Friday, September 1, 2017, which ruling set aside the results of the Presidential election that was recently held in that country. An election should be an occasion that affords voters the right to freely and fairly choose their representatives. As long as an election is marred by gross irregularities, it undermines the will of the people and in the process, it also becomes a direct attack on the concept of democracy.
It is the fourth time Odinga has lost an election, often alleging fraud.
“Taking the totality of the entire evidence, we are satisfied that the elections were not conducted in the accordance to the dictates of the Constitution,” said Chief Justice David Maraga, who described the results as “invalid, null and void.”
