Full statement by US Embassy in Harare on Wikileaks

US ambassador regrets ‘un-diplomatic’ leaks

The current US ambassador to Zimbabwe, Charles Ray moved swiftly on Tuesday to mitigate the damage caused by the leakage of diplomatic cables sent to Washington by his predecessor Ambassador Christopher Dell. In a statement issued on Tuesday, Ray said “I cannot vouch for the authenticity of any one of these documents. But I can say that the United States deeply regrets the disclosure of any information that was intended to be confidential. And we condemn it.”

In the cable, Dell outlines his views of Zimbabwe’s prospects at the time – eight months ahead of the 2008 elections — and gives blunt assessments of key political figures.

Leaked: US assessment of Zimbabwe leaders

The Wiki Leaks website, an international non-profit media organization that publishes submissions of otherwise unavailable documents from anonymous sources and leaks has begun publishing a quarter million classified United States documents. The exposures contain top secret cables sent to Washington by US diplomats from around the world.
