HARARE – Three suspected state security agents driving a Nissan Note vehicle with covered registration plates on Thursday kidnapped Elizel Masaraure, a nephew to firebrand unionist and human rights campaigner Obert Masaraure.
The incident which took place around 16:30hrs also saw Lenny Sabiti, a neighbor of Masaraure, being abducted by the men who claimed to be officers from the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) although they never showed their ID’s.
Both Elizel and Sabiti were taken from Retreat Waterfalls, at a shopping area next to Obert’s residence, and told they were being taken to the offices of the Amalgamated Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) where Obert is the President, but they never got to the offices.
A source who spoke to Nehanda Radio said: “The two were released after an hour of interrogation. The suspected agents also took Solar batteries belonging to Sabiti. On interrogating Sabiti they wanted to know how to access Masaraure’s house.
“Sabiti was tortured as they sought information. Their main interest was nature of security at the residence. The suspicion is that they are planning to raid the house tonight.
“For the past week after the aborted SAPES press conference these suspected agents have been consistently visiting the area looking for Obert Masaraure who was out of the country and only returned recently,” the source told Nehanda Radio.
